Setting: Gorgeous February day (it's Mamaw's birthday to be exact), the girls are in matching outfits and we're picking up Ella early from school to drive to Mamaw's favorite tea room (an hour and a half away). I rush in to the school as soon as they unlock the doors. I've managed to work out, get ready and keep everything on its scheduled time. I'm doing great.
Ms. Natalie (the director) meets me at the door.
"Hey, Erica. I wanted to be the one to tell you something. It's about what Ella did today at school." (with an all-too-concerned look on her face) Of course there are about a million things running through my head. She is generally a sweet girl, but the child can have her moments of rebellion, disobedience, and outright ugliness. We've never had any major issues at school, but there's a first time for everything.
"Oh no!" I said.
Natalie grabbed my forearm as I was putting my hands to my face, not even knowing what happened yet, "She cut her hair today in class."
"What?!?"
"It's not very noticeable to me, but I'm sure as a mom you will notice."
And so I set off to see the damage. The first thing Ms. Missy does when she sees me is say, "I'm so sorry." (totally NOT her fault!)
Ella be-bops out the door as if its any ole' day. Nothing major to speak of. Excited as can be to see me! I'm scouring her head. Natalie's right, at first glance there are no major chunks, scalped bangs, or uneven sections. But I found it right away.
"Ella, did you cut your hair at school today?"
"Yes," she answers confidently.
What is the only thing scissors are supposed to cut?"
"My hair."
"Umm, no." Ms. Natalie is behind her just about to lose it at this point. "Try again."
"Paper?"
"Yes. And who is the only person that is supposed to cut your hair?"
"Oh yeah, Ms. Christy." she remembered.
And then Ms. Missy handed me a souvenir. They saved the hair for me...
It's pretty mullet-looking if you ask me. But I've managed to blend it in with her hair so it's not too bad. Why did she do it? "I don't know. I was cutting my paper in my seat and my hair was there. I just wanted to."
Literally, her teachers say the only way they knew is because she didn't push her chair in after she got up to go to centers and when they went to push her chair in they saw it.
You can't make this stuff up sometimes.
